SS Maheno Shipwreck – Fraser Island

Maheno Shipwreck Photograph - Fraser Island

Following the lead of Darren Tierney, I thought I’d post my version of the SS Maheno shipwreck I shot during our trip to Fraser Island.

On the third morning of our camping trip to Fraser Island, Simon, our human alarm clock, woke us up bright and early. Bleary eyed, and definitely not feeling like getting out of my warm sleeping bag, I somehow managed to lift myself up and, through the trees above, take a quick look at the sky outside. It was still dark, but we could see stars in the sky – not a bad sign. We quickly got dressed and woke ourselves up as much as possible, packed our camera gear into the 4×4 and we were off.

The SS Maheno Shipwreck is about 15km south of our camp site, stranded on 75 Mile Beach, and by the time we arrived sunlight was starting to appear over the horizon. Not much later, the clouds were beginning to pink, and the sky turned a nice pastel blue. This is what we came here for.

Each of us found our preferred composition around the ship and we began another long day of shooting.

Fraser Mangrove – Sunset at Mckenzies Jetty

After a long day shooting various locations around Fraser Island; Darren, Simon and I decided to head to Mckenzie’s Jetty on the west side of the island to shoot the sunset.

Unfortunately I didn’t make the most of the light during its ‘peak’, but I did manage to get this photograph that I like after the sun had long disappeared over the horizon.

I slowly composed my image around this Mangrove tree not far from Mckenzie’s Jetty, while also trying to capture the hint of red light on the clouds and the golden glow of the setting sun over the horizon. A long exposure allowed me to really pull out the colours of the rapidly darkening sky.

75 Mile Beach, Fraser Island

I haven’t had much time for processing my photographs in recent times, but here’s a quick one I processed last week of 75 Mile Beach from my trip to Fraser Island with Darren Tierney and Simon Beedle. Also, I don’t have the internet at home at the moment either after moving house, so that’s why my blog posts have been scarce.

I lost count of the number of times we drove up and down this stretch of beach during our trip, but it was a lot! The photograph below was from one of our early morning drives down the beach to check out the Maheno shipwreck. I found the light facing North to be better on this particular morning, so decided to leave the shipwreck for another morning, as I wanted to shoot the Maheno from the front – facing south.

Fraser Island Dingoes

Just a quick post as I don’t have much time. A couple of dingo shots from Fraser Island. We saw quite a few dingoes while we were on the Island. The dingo in the photos below was probably the most relaxed of the lot.

Enjoy!
