Byron Bay Lighthouse, Byron Bay, NSW

I’ve recently returned from a trip to the Gold Coast to catch up with a good friend of mine, Darren Tierney. We were lucky enough to head south and spend a day at Byron Bay in New South Wales under perfect weather conditions.

Watching the clouds build a couple of hours before sun set, we suspected it was going to be a ripper. After shooting Wategos Beach for a short while, we headed up to the lighthouse to watch the sun set. We weren’t wrong with our suspicion, as the light cloud cover lit up a nice pink hue.

I am very happy with the result after attempting to shoot this location many times and coming away with nothing spectacular. Persistence pays off!

Sugarloaf Rock

After a bit of a hiatus from blogging and photographing, I have just returned from an epic, although short, trip to the South-West of Western Australia with something to share.

Sugarloaf Rock is one of my favourite spots to photograph around Dunsborough, and a few days ago I had the opportunity to photograph it at sunrise. It was windy as anything, but I was determined to get the shot. After scrambling around in the dark to find a composition, I found this angle and set up my gear. I fired off just a few frames and packed up my gear. This was one of those times when I was confident I had something special.

I also shot some photos of the surrounding areas – Meelup Beach, Wyadup Beach, Cape Naturaliste, Canal Rocks. These photographs will be uploaded to the galleries shortly.

A couple of nights ago I was showing Simon around to a few of the popular local Perth photo locations along the Swan River. We decided to stop by the Matilda Bay Boatshed to take a few photographs at sunset. The clouds in the sky had been quite promising all day and we knew that light was going to be pretty good.

Simon set up his Fotoman 617 and shot a few frames, and when he had done, I took a couple of longer exposures to capture the last light of the day.

Natural Arch Springbrook National Park

Shortly after buying the Canon 5D Mark 2 body back in March, I spent a day out at Natural Arch shooting some photos. I have had the images sitting here in a folder on my desktop, but never got around to posting them here on the blog. They’re both pano stitches of about 7 photos each from memory. I find that 7 or 8 vertical photos stitched together gives a pretty good result – not too wide, so it works out to about a 3:1 ratio without having to crop too much.

Bibra Lake

I spent this morning down at Bibra Lake taking some photos and testing out my new 70-200mm F4 L lens. I arrived just as the sun was about to pop up over the horizon, and it was freezing. I set up my camera and started shooting as the fog was slowly rising, and was being lit up from behind by the sun as it crept above the horizon. It felt good to be out and about shooting photos, even if it was only 7 or so degrees. It had been a while.

The attached image is 7 photographs shot with the Canon 5D MkII and 70-200 F4 L – stitched together in PTGui Pro.

I’m not too sure about this one, which is why I posted it up here on the blog. It’s currently sitting in the ‘maybe’ folder on my desktop. I like the different layers of colour from the foreground up to the sky, but i’m not too sure about the simplicity of the overall composition.

What do you guys think?
